From 11th to 17th of November, Bookcity Milano 2024 – the 13th edition of the festival of books attended by a plethora of creative authors – will make a splashing return.
What’s Bookcity Milano?
The last month of autumn brings to the table an event named Bookcity Milano, returning once again to the stage. Being known as a cultural initiative which was established in 2012 by the city of Milan and the BookCity Milano Association, is coming back. A week starting from 11th to the 17th of November will provide us with various activities such as meetings, presentations, various performances that highlight literary works, exhibitions and workshops – all of which showcase books from diverse genres and historical periods.
The activities will be held in abundant locations : universities (IULM University, Università degli Studi di Milano, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore etc.), libraries (Biblioteca del Conservatorio, Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana etc.) and bookstores (Libraccio Piazza Indipendenza, Libreria Tutti giù per terra etc.).
Upcoming IULM events: what’s in store for bookworms
Just like in previous years, the lineup for Bookcity Milano 2024 is fairly extensive, with two highlights worth noting. The first event “Words to Tell Conflicts” is held on November 14 at 6:00 P.M, and features the Spanish author Clara Usón, celebrated as a distinguished voice in modern Spanish literature. Usón will share insights from her acclaimed novels.
Another major event is held on the same day, November 14 at 4:30 P.M, titled “Tomasi di Lampedusa and Cinema”. This session will present a brand new edition of “Il principe fulvo” written by former IULM professor Salvatore Silvano Nigro, and will explore the legacy of this renowned Italian writer.
There’s no shortage of exciting activities, as the variety of events to choose from doesn’t stop here. An interactive talk titled “Encounters between Svevo and Joyce (not to mention Beckett)” will take place on November 13 at 6:00 P.M. It is set to examine unique connections between Italo Svevo, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett. The dialogue will highlight each writer’s cultural heritage and how it shaped their literary contributions.
Still on November 13 at 3:00 P.M don’t miss the in-depth session “Dialogues on Peace on the Borders of War in Ukraine” with Francesco Vietti, anthropologist and author of “MIR. Dialoghi sulla pace ai confini della guerra in Ucraina” (People, 2023). This in-depth event aims to gather peace advocates to discuss needed efforts for dialogue amid the on-going conflict.
Beyond IULM: what else is in Milan this November
On November 14 at 5:00 P.M, at at Università degli Studi di Milano, an event named “War and Peace in Attic Theater” will take place. This will introduce the new Carocci series “Teatro classico in scena”, offering modern translations of classic Greek plays. Dramatic readings of the play’s passages and the expert’s insights will make it an immersive experience for all.
Lastly, on November 15 at 4:00 P.M at Castello Sforzesco a special event “Americas: Mexico in the Mirror” will be held in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Milan. This gathering marks the launch of “Americhe”, a new series by the publisher Il Mulino, directed by IULM professor and historitian Massimo de Giuseppe as well as theologist Gianni La Bella.
Unmissable activity for music enthusiasts
Bookcity Milano 2024 offers one exclusive concert for music lovers with Franco Mussida on November 14 at 8:00 P.M, held at IULM.
The co-founder of Premiata Forneria Marconi band will present this unique event where music will be explored as a universal language. Using popular, classic, and jazzy tunes, he’ll bring to life his book “The Planet of Music and the Journey of Iòtu“. This volumn summarizes 35 years of studying how music evokes emotions.
